The is a great walk of a historic area. Ballysaggartmore was an area of great hardship, death during the famine for local Irish however this was in stark contrast to Arthur Kiely-Ussher the local landlord who evicted many of the local tenants to build a castle bigger and grander than any other in the area. The building would eclipse the already very impressice Sradbally castle owned by his brother John. He evicted and destroyed many homes in the area in order to grow crops so funds could be raised to build the castle. However he ran into difficulties and the castle was never built. The entrance bridge towers are all that remain.
