Walk Description

Can be accessed by public transport by taking the Galway to Clifden bus to just before Recess (at right turn sign-posted for Maumeen). Walk up this road to the start of the walk (approx 3km). If driving, drive up this road to the carpark serving the pilgrim path to Maumeen (a saddle in the mountains above you, where St Patrick is said to have visited). Continue up the road on foot, with the Maumturks on your right, for approx 3km northwest – until you are below the next prominent saddle. Hike up to the Maumahoge saddle; the final climb is quite steep. Once on the saddle turn southeast and climb the higher ground containing the lake above you (lake not yet visible). Once the lake comes into view, stay on this high ground and walk around the lake in a clockwise direction. Once you cross the small stream exiting the lake, you can start to climb the northwest ridge of Binn idir an dá Log (also know as Barrslievenaroy). This is steep in places with scree so walk with care (there will be a steep drop to your right as you climb; use it as a guide, but don’t get too close). It becomes less steep as height is gained. The summit (702m) is reached via the mountain’s northern shoulder (696m). Continue to the southern shoulder (624m) and follow the winding ridge, first eastward and then to the south, dropping down to the saddle bellow Binn Chaónaigh. Climb the comparatively easy slopes of Binn Chaónaigh, initially heading south and then east to the summit (avoiding steep ground on your left). The descent to Maumeen is over rough ground with some steep crags. Leaving the summit of Binn Chaónaigh, walk in a south-southeast direction, passing between some crags (on your right) and a small lake (on your left) until you find a fence. Follow this fence, more or less southward, down to the small chapel at Maumeen (staying to higher ground right of the fence is easier and dryer). Once at Maumeen, a good path leads back down to the carpark.
Walk time approx 6 hours for a party with reasonable fitness. All directions are approximate; walkers should equip themselves with necessary maps and navigational skills (particularly in bad weather). The route shown here was drawn on the map, rather than walked with a GPS device; it should be used as a general guide only.
